              Warning: Sometimes on the battlefield
you will still find relics of explosives.
All these shells, hand grenades, and
mortar rounds can even nowadays still
              be very dangerous.
Some of the artillery bombs may contain
poison gas, which can cause severe
              blistering or worse injuries.
In France it is by law forbidden to
              remove relics from the battlefield.
So, it is for your own safety:
take a picture of the steel harvest,
              but leave these relics untouched!

              Pervijze Tervate Stuijvekenskerke
              Yzer - Belgium:

              Pervijze - Tervate - Stuijvekenskerke

              part 2

              year of visit: 2005.

              Furtheron southward from Ramskapelle
              to Pervijze, still following
              the former Belgian lines
              along the Yzer to Tervate,
              and Stuijvekenskerke.
In the village of Pervijze we find this observation tower.

This picture of Belgian soldiers has been made
near this spot in October 1914.
Again the tower is fortified with concrete walls on the inside.
Along the western bank of the Yzer river,
near the bridge of Tervate, ....
.... the monument for Maj. Count d 'Oultremont,
and his 2nd Batallion of the 1st Reg. Grenadeers,
who were killed at this location during a stormattack
              on October 22, 1914.

With my back to the monument,
a view over the Yzer to the former German lines.
              We drive on to Stuijvekenskerke,
a dry spot amidst  inundated lands,
              north west of Diksmuide.
This location is called Onze Lieve Vrouwe Hoekske,
              "Our Holy Lady's Corner".
This demarcation stone marks the most advanced point
              of the Germans in 1914.

The "corner" used to be a  former outpost of the Belgian Army....
... and served as an observation post towards the Yzer,
some 300 m. away from here.
              This bronze plate commemorates ...
... the artillery officer in charge here,
the Franciscan Monk/Lieutenant, Brother Martial Lekeux,
Who had his observation post in the tower
for 10 months in a row.
Again the inside of the tower is fortified with concrete walls.
View from the observation tower in the direction of the Yzer.
Right behind the tower in some one's backyard a bunker,
a relic of  the extensive maze of dugouts,
              and bunkers around this spot.

              The Chapel of Peace...
Two monuments in front of the chapel.
The left one in memory for the 5th Regiment Lancers.
              The right one to commemorate
the 1st and 2nd Bicycle and Carabineers Brigades.
With a last view of this now so romantic looking location, ...
....we drive on to Oudekapelle to find this bunker.

Southward bound on to the next track of the Yzer for us:
              the Trench of Death....

Pierre, I have now collected the ceramic memorial picture of my great, great uncle, Guillaume, in his military uniform. I have inscribed the 1ste Jagers te Voet and dates 1/12/1890 - 21-31/10/1914. We are still uncertain where to leave it and one person has suggested I should perhpas try to get permission to stick it to a suitable memorial, perhpas somewhere near Pervijze. I just would not know who to ask or even yet where to put it. Have you any ideas?
It is a lovely small plaque, and it says Graf Unbekond on it, so it's clear it a photograph of a soldier whose grave is unknown - and it puts a face to the graves of unknown soldiers. Anyway, any thought welcome!
              Good wishes

              For Anita.
I have thought about a suggestion for you, Anita.

I would suggest, leave the memorial picture with consent of the landowners somewhere along the Berkelhofstraat, or ask permission to lay it on the mass grave on the nearby Ramskapelle Belgian Cemetery, only 5 km. away from where your great great uncle, Guillaume, died.

I leave you with3 googled maps to illustrate the situation, and why I make these suggestions to you, Anita. Please, view these maps below my message.

This is most helpful, Pierre. I think. As you say, I would need permission to leave it somewhere. Would you know whom I might need to contact to leave it on the mass grave at Ramskappelle? This would seem a good place
              Pierre op 04-11-2008 00:07
@ Anita. I am afraid, thatI can't help you with that, Anita. Perhaps ask around in the small village, who is in charge over there?

Pierre just to let you know that we found the Berkelhof Farm and also had a wonderful, wonderful day sharing with Belgian families at Oeren on 11/11/08. In the afternoon, we took a bus tour around this area and, at Ramskappelle, I finally laid my beautiful plaque for Guillaume Batselier. Through the kindness of Joris Ryckeboer and Luc Klaps, permission had been granted for me to lay a wreath and to leave the memorial to Guillaume at one of the graves of unknown soldiers. There were many men from his regiment - the 1st Jagers te Voet - and one was killed around the same time as Guillaume (21-31 October 1914, in the inundation). There were 5 unknown soldiers next to him and I wondered if Guillaume lay there.
It was a fantastic but overwhelmingexperience and I would like to thank you for all your help and for allowing me to follow this route along the Yser and pay respects to those who gave their lives for us - not least, my great, great uncle, Guillaume Batslier.

@ Anita. Anita, I appreciate it very much, that you took the effort to let me know, how my advise did help you to achieve your goals.
Indeed, reading your message, you must have had an impressive, very special day, that you probably never will forget, Anita.
From my own experience, I know that the Flemish show a great sense for hospitality, and they are always eager to help relatives of a fallen soldier in one way or another.
As I already expected, Anita, you did find the right place to lay your memorial plaque for Guillaume Batselier with the help of some local gentlemen.
Anyway, your trip to Berkelhof Farm, the memorial service at Oeren, and the laying of the plaque at Ramskapelle: after 90 years you could not have been closer to the traces of Guillaume, than you have been now.

I am glad, that my tips have been so useful for you. Thank you very much, Anita, for your report of this eventful day.

              Have a nice weekend.
